There really was a Thomas Cook. He was born in 1808 in Melbourne, in Derbyshire in the UK. A cabinet maker and evangelist, he came up with the novel idea of offering excursions while walking to a meeting of the Temperance Society and so, on July 5 1841, arranged to take a group of 500 from Leicester to Loughborough. By 1851 he'd organised tours for 150,000 people to the Great Exhibition in London and by the 1860s was escorting groups to Switzerland, Italy, Egypt and the United States. Over 177 years later, we can honestly say we know a lot about travel!
Today over 22 million travellers trust Thomas Cook to create happy holidays. Now we're back in Australia and ready to bring Australian travellers a new approach to travel insurance.
